Meet Malachi †

What first drew you into music?

Music has always been part of my life, in one way or another. I mean, my mum was playing me Smashing Pumpkins when I was in the womb. My parents were always pretty hip so I owe a lot of my passion and tastes to them. I can thank my dad for introducing me to Funk, my mum for Nu Metal, and both of them for my tastes in HipHop/Rap. When I was 11, I got my license to do radio at WGDR. I did that for years. Thanks to the radio and internet, when I was in a dark place after high school, I was able to use the music industry as a place to escape. Long story short, that’s kinda’ how I ended up here.

You are one of the best up and coming musicians we have encountered on the internet! And your track “Midnight” is probably your best track yet! Could you tell us more about the story behind this track?

Couple years ago, a local friend of mine had a band that I don’t think still exists. That guy is a machine, always working on something creative. #DJVU, #VETICA. Anyway, he was familiar with my music, hit me up, asked me to do a remix, and I threw that together. That’s probably my favorite track to date, so if any of my singles pop off someday, I hope it’s that one.

Going over your Soundcloud we can tell you love experimenting with new sounds. Can you tell us more about your studio setup and some of your favorite plugins/instruments?

I’ve done everything so far on a laptop with FL Studio, Massive, and samples alone. At first, I didn’t have a budget for music so I pirated my FL and plugins, and went to work. Over the years I picked up a legal copy of FL but you’ve gotta’ start somewhere. At some point I’d like to pick up a keyboard, but FL is pretty powerful and I use a lot of samples. You can get a lot done with very little.

Your signature sound is already very professional and amazing to listen to! How did you manage to achieve such a professional sound in such a short time? Can you tell us more about your musical background?

I look to Shlohmo, Clams Casino, and honestly world music for a lot of inspiration. While I’m active in a scene where there’s a lot of over the top energy and ‘bangers’, my style is in this moody and groovy niche. I spent a lot of time teaching myself how to make the music that I wanted to hear which would fall into a kind of otherworldly, genreless, and often melancholic area. I spent a lot of late nights studying production via Youtube, or bouncing ideas off LEViT∆TE. LEVi is a titan of sound design. He’s got mastering credits on most of my work.

All of your tracks are very melodic. Do you play any real-life instruments?

Growing up I experimented with guitar, bass, piano, and believe it or not, vocals. I haven’t implemented any live elements yet. However, I have had conversations with colleagues about bringing their instruments or vocals into my work. I usually start a project with an arpeggiator and bassline, and build around that. ‘ All that Haze’ wasn’t particularly complex and was written, mastered, and released in a day.

What are your goals for the coming months? Any upcoming projects we can get excited about?

I’ve been focusing on performance and fortunate to be out Djing sets at least weekly. I’d like to continue to build that momentum and start traveling. I encourage artists and fans to reach out via their preferred social sites. I try to be as transparent as possible and enjoy discussing music, arts, and culture.
