Meet Waivs

What first drew you into music?

As a kid, music always made me move. It made me want to dance and let go. Music has always been my outlet and a way for me to get away. At first, I was more into Pop and R&B/Soul music. My first album I ever got was 8701 by Usher. Then I started to get more into Hip Hop. It was movement, freedom, and lyricism all wrapped into one. I love it. I started to listen to more Lil Wayne and he is probably why I rap today. Dude was too cold. Fast forward to today and those early influences can be heard in the music I make now.

Listening to your music we can tell you love incorporating interesting new sounds and techniques within each track! What inspires you to experiment and evolve?

Artistically, I go by Waivs. That is in part because I do not want to limit myself. I feel I can do any kind of music. I like to work with producers who are diverse to compliment me as well. Kodiak Soul (producer of Floral) and I have been working on songs together for a while. What you hear now is a more polished product that is only going to get better. As an artist, I don’t want to be held back by fear. If today I write a love song and tomorrow I want to write a banger, who can really stop me other than myself? That’s my approach and why I’m not afraid to try different things that will help me grow. Growth and knowing oneself is the key here.

It seems like you already found your signature sound 😊 Do you have any tips for upcoming musicians that can’t seem to find their own sound?

Yes, thank you for appreciating the sound! I would say as far signature sound goes, Floral definitely fits the bill. My dude Kodiak Soul shapes the sound and lays out the environment for me to maneuver in. So step one is to appreciate who you are working with. The more you appreciate their work, then the more natural the product will be. Your team will be more privy to helping you achieve your aim as well when you show gratitude. Also, build confidence in trying out new things. If you got to listen to different music for inspiration then go the extra mile and do so. You never know where a rabbit hole can take you and you just might discover your sound if go you go down it.

Your track “Floral” is your best track in our opinion! From its artwork to the Incredibly powerful sound we absolutely love it. Could you tell us more about the story behind this track? Also, what is your creative process like?

Floral is a feel good song geared towards empowering women. Women are always an inspiration for me in a lot of my music. So anytime I feel like I’m making music that they can enjoy, then I feel even better about myself. My creative process can vary depending on what’s going on and my mood. For Floral, the idea came from the first couple lines. As soon as I had those first two lines in the first verse, I knew where I wanted to take the song. Kodiak already named the beat Floral so I hopped on that. I just feel like if I got a girl some flowers, then I would try to get something special. Doesn’t have to be expensive but just something different so she knows I’m always putting extra thought in for her.

What are your musical goals for the future?

Musically, I want to be able to fulfill my potential. I know when I do that, great things will happen. The only way to do that is by constantly challenging myself and growing. Staying disciplined to my craft, my well-being, and building the right relationships will help me get there so that’s  what I will continue to do.

What do you have planned for the coming months? Any upcoming projects we can get excited about?

We’re going to be shooting a video for Floral soon, so be on the look out for that. I plan on dropping more music as well, expect a different vibe from Waivs come Fall/Winter time. I’m a visionary and at this point it’s just about putting together the vision piece by piece for you to enjoy.
