What first drew you into music and EDM in particular?
Ever since a young age, I always shared a deeper connection to music. Based on the mood that I was in at the time, I was internally inspired by different genres and the desire to diversify my knowledge. I wanted to match music with my experiences in life and I think that brought me closer to what I was listening to. As far as being a DJ and music producer in the EDM industry, I found my passion through a family member who was the DJ at a family wedding. I was only 10 years old at the time and all I wanted to do was press play on his CDJ’s. From this wedding, I bought my first inexpensive mixer (I think made by Apple) and began to just play music before eventually learning how to mix. I think at the age of 16 is when I really started to get into EDM as a genre. I started to realize that being a DJ and producing music went hand in hand and so I purchased my first DAW, FL Studio 10. Today, I’m 23 years old and work with Ableton Live.
Your latest remix of “Dancing with a stranger” is a very modern pop/edm track! The original track is amazing, and your own mix/master is great! How did you achieve such a great signature sound in such a short time? Also, what is your creative process like?
It’s funny! For the remix of “Dancing With A Stranger”, I had a day time job Monday through Friday and would hear the vocal every day. From the original, I felt that it deserved a happier and upbeat type of vibe. I was able to find the acapella of the original and work from there. I think that’s where my inspiration comes from a lot of times; being around music that stimulates me to create. My creative process is very free-flowing. I never like to force anything, but try to bring my own signature with the sounds. I’ll break songs down by chords, bass, drums, melody, and everyone’s favorite, MIXING!
“Scheriff” is a very unique surname 😊 Do you get a lot of attention because of it?
Funny you mention that. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten “Who shot the Scheriff” or my personal favorite “The Scheriff’s in Town”. I think it may draw some more attention, I’m not sure to be honest.
You have recently released a remix of “Emotion”. The track is a modern EDM/Chill fusion and we wonder if you plan to release more Chill sounding tracks in the future
My remix of Emotion is actually the chill sound I’ve been looking for as an artist. While a lot of my music is upbeat and good vibes which I love as well, I think Emotion is really where I want to be when releasing music. As I said, I don’t like to force anything, so that particular vocal inspired me to create more of a chill vibe.
What are your musical goals for the future?
My music goals consist of being a part of Garnish Music Production School in Brooklyn, NY and really learning from first hand professionals in my craft. I’ve been self-taught my whole life so I’m interested in gaining help to work most efficient. As far as being a DJ, I look to line up some international gigs where I can do what I love, making people dance and feel good.
What are your goals for the coming months, any upcoming projects we can get excited about?
My goals for the upcoming months consist of releasing my first record released single since 2013 and also gearing towards my first EP/Album at music school. I’m excited to dedicate my time strictly to music production and I’m excited for what the near future holds.
