Luck Has Nothing To Do With It: Meet Murtagh

Nothing makes you feel quite as inadequate as finding out the producer whose music you’ve been fawning over is only 16 years old, but hey, there’s no rule against fangirling someone younger than you, is there? Meet Murtagh: our first Irish selection for HBT’s curated Discover section, and a producer you’ll be glad you laid eyes on (laid ears on?) before he hits the mainstage worldwide. 

The Dublin native boasts a truly unique style and a varied track selection, with his typical genres being electro, progressive house, and midtempo (around 100 to 120 bpm). He claims to differentiate himself by producing certain types of music regardless of what’s trending at the time, and that’s something anyone who has been on his SoundCloud can wholeheartedly attest to. This, paired with his unique production approach, make for a listening experience most producers, established and up and coming alike, can’t offer you. A quick listen through his tracks leaves you with the same appreciation you’d have for the most legendary songs in EDM, and a clear feeling that what he has created is utterly original. You know how sometimes, a famous producer will come out with a track, and then it feels like everything for the next 4 months is just variations of that song? There’s no trace of outside influence in Murtagh’s music. It’s 100% him.

While he’s been producing since November 2011, he has yet to learn how to DJ, so your primary source for Murtagh’s magic will be his SoundCloud until he starts mixing and goes on tour! With his production knowledge being what it is, we have no doubt he’ll be a sick DJ the second he delves into that craft. While this is pure speculation, if his production is any indication of what his DJ sets will be like, we have no doubt he’ll be creating quintessential Murtagh nights filled solely with his own unfettered style much like Madeon does with his own live shows.

For 2015, Murtagh has a couple singles and remixes finished and ready to be released, an EP planned, and an album he’s currently in the process of planning. While you should expect to see the first two fairly soon, you’ll probably be waiting another 1-2 years to get your hands on his first album. But think about it: he’ll still only be 17-18, which means you still have decades of Murtagh coming your way. He also has a couple collabs in progress with Puppet, Friendzone, and James Egbert, which should all be out and ready to enjoy by the end of the year.
