One Of The Most Talented DJs Around, Meet Skysia

What first drew you into music?

I actually went to school for film. That was my life! My greatest passion. One day I decided to teach myself the piano and from there everything shifted. I slowly moved into production and started playing shows. I remember one specific day where I looked at where I was and realized that I no longer make films and music has become my life. It was a shock! So I don’t exactly know what drew me into music but it felt like a decision that was beyond my control.

Listening to your music we can tell you love incorporating interesting new sounds and techniques within each track! What inspires you to experiment and evolve?

I’ve always been inspired by textures and unusual percussion sounds. One of my favorite things about electronic music is the freedom you have with sound. Before electronic music became such an integral part of our culture all we had was live instruments and a drum kit. Don’t get me wrong I love live instruments and respect the craft but for years we essentially heard the same drum kit. Kick, snare, toms etc. Now we can use any sound we want for our percussion. This exploration inspires me so much and I find myself recording sounds and creating textures that feel new for the listener.

It seems like you already found your signature sound 😊 Do you have any tips for upcoming musicians that can’t seem to find their own sound?

The biggest tip I have is to create music that YOU would want to hear. This may be easier said than done but you truly have to forget about what others will think. That’s been my biggest blockage. The quicker you can care less about other peoples opinions the quicker you’ll find your sound. Another important aspect to this is approaching music from a play state. I find when I take the process too seriously the track falls apart but when I approach production from a play state, I tend to be more present with the entire journey instead of only being focused on the end result.

Your track “Motion” is your best track in our opinion! From its artwork to the Incredibly powerful sound we absolutely love it. Could you tell us more about the story behind this track? Also, what is your creative process like?

Thank you! This track is one of my favorites as well. I really feel like I put the most emotion and soul into this track. I was feeling a lot at the time and felt so many aspects of my life shifting and evolving. It was a bit overwhelming. Change is scary sometimes especially when its multiple things at once. I feel like I made this track as a way to calm myself. Something about it allowed me to dive deeper into what I was feeling while also saying “its going to be alright”

My creative process is constantly shifting. Everyone has different methods but for me I’ve never worked well with routines. Every time I start a track I begin differently. Sometimes I start with the drums and sometimes I start with chopping vocals. It just depends on what I’m feeling in that moment. The routine of needing to start a specific way everytime has always been boring to me and has always been a blockage on my creativity. This whole process of discovering your way of working is such an important aspect of creating music.

What are your musical goals for the future?

I plan on putting together a live set with multiple instrumentalists involved. I think its important to further our progress on combining electronic music with live twist. I’m excited to get this up and running!

What do you have planned for the coming months? Any upcoming projects we can get excited about?

I’m currently working on another EP. I’ve got about 3 tracks that are ready to go so far. Looking to put out a 5 song EP early next year. After that I plan on focusing on completing a full LP.
