Well, music has always been a big part of my life, I can remember the first time my dad played ‘walk this way’ by RUN DMC when i was about 6 in the car and since then hip hop and music has carried me through everything, I must’ve been about 12-13 when I started listening to biggie and Eminem and i always thought how dope it would be to be up on the stages like them, but it wasn’t until I was about 16 when the thought of making my own music was a serious thought, i already knew I didn’t want to work a normal job and even though I tried my best I was never great at school, I had been going through a lot of stuff at the time and it got to a point where i was just like “f**k it, i’m gonna chase my dream and if i fail it can’t be worse than how i feel now”. so i did exactly that and here we are now, not too bad.
You are one of the best up and coming musicians we have encountered on the internet! And your track “Rosetta” is probably your best track yet! Could you tell us more about the story behind this track?
Thank you!! yea Rosetta holds a very special place in my heart, i remember when i heard the beat for the first time it was one of those moments where everything just clicked and the words just kinda came straight out, yeah I did have someone in mind when I wrote it, but by the time I was ready to release it things hadn’t worked out hahah (and no her name wasn’t actually Rosetta) so now I just kind of see the song as a figure of speech, everyone has a Rosetta, or maybe they haven’t found their Rosetta yet, but there’s a Rosetta for everyone u know? But yea i think this song is probably my proudest track yet and i hope it can really get out there!
Going over your Soundcloud we can tell you love experimenting with new sounds. Can you tell us more about your studio setup and some of your favorite plugins/instruments?
Yeah of course! well, I’m always working on my home studio which is really just my bedroom I’ve slowly transformed over time, I’ve used about every different DAW from audacity to garageband to pro tools but have settled with logic and have been using that for a long time now, i learned to mix just through pressing buttons and watching YouTube videos i never really had any music friends when i started so I’ve just taught myself everything and yeah i’m always experimenting with different sounds! I’ve never been able to settle on one type of style to go with i mean you could list of every sub genre of hip hop, chances are I’ve probably done it. Some people would call it unprofessional or messy but i guess it just kind of makes me unique, i love all different types of music so if something bumps and i like it then ill post it.
Your signature sound is already very professional and amazing to listen to! How did you manage to achieve such a professional sound in such a short time? Can you tell us more about your musical background?
thank you! I’m such a critic of my mixes so that’s actually very reassuring to hear hahah, i don’t really have a big musical background besides just listening to music 24/7 and I’ve just taught myself everything from YouTube, but I’m always listening to mixes of other songs trying to figure out what makes them sound so clean and just trying to incorporate it into my own work and again honestly i wouldn’t be able to make my songs sound the way they do in this amount of time if it wasn’t for YouTube tutorials hahah.
All of your tracks are very melodic. Do you play any real-life instruments?
besides playing ukulele in primary school, no hahah. Actually i did play guitar for a couple years when I was younger, would definitely have been the next Jimi Hendrix if i kept it up. I always try to treat vocals like an instrument however which is probably where the melodic side of things come into play, I may not have the melodic skills like Adele but I try my best.
What are your goals for the coming months? Any upcoming projects we can get excited about?
My main goal has always been to just perform, the festivals here in New Zealand are where it’s at so I’m always just working on trying to get up on those stages so hoping to hear some good news soon! I haven’t got any projects coming for now, i put out my first project earlier this year called ‘All We Ever Got’ on Spotify and Apple music but i’m working on singles every day and I’ve got my next three singles lined up and am hoping to get some of them out before the end of the year!
