What first drew you into music?

Well I grew up with 2Pac and Eminem, and later on 50 Cent and Kanye.  How could I not be a rapper? And my name, I just always thought that character’s name in the Scream movies (Cotton Weary) was the DUMBEST I’d heard.  Just a completely ludicrous name, so I figured I’d take it for myself.

You are one of the best up and coming musicians we have encountered on the internet! And your track “The One And Only” is probably your best track yet! Could you tell us more about the story behind this track?

I appreciate that, although I usually get people complimenting ‘The Mystery’ and/or ‘Goin to Hell’. With the insane mass shooting situation in this country today, making a song like ‘Goin to Hell’ was important to me to really get people talking. As for ‘The One And Only’, I love working with that singer (Delani) and producer (Auditory), and that broad theme of “I ain’t ever getting old; no one will ever replace me” felt really empowering and I just hope listeners feel that.

Going over your Soundcloud we can tell you love experimenting with new sounds. Can you tell us more about your studio setup and some of your favorite plugins/instruments?

Sure yea, I actually designed and built my own soundproof recording booth in my place, and  I use the amazing Manley Ref C microphone for all my vocals, as well as the APA Juggernaut Twin preamp, UA 1176 LN and Warm Audio WA2A compressors. I also have the Waves Diamond bundle along with a fair number of UAD plugins with the external “satellite”. With plugins I tend to try and keep it simple, I pick my favorite ones and just stick to em.  For instance my go-to reverb is Audio Ease’ Altiverb 7. I dig that one so that’s the one I use. It’s all about the music not so much the toys.

Your signature sound is already very professional and amazing to listen to! How did you manage to achieve such a professional sound in such a short time? Can you tell us more about your musical background?

Well I mentioned some of the gear and software I use, I also have a Lynx Hilo as my converter/interface and I have my own pro mastering rig too.  That consists of a Dangerous BAX EQ, a Dramastic Audio Obsidian compressor and a Pendulum Audio PL-2 limiter. That all tends to give a nice sort of high end ‘sheen’ to it all, but honestly at the end of the day I  just do what sounds good to me. With music and any art, there are no rules except the ones we artists make up for ourselves.

All of your tracks are very melodic. Do you play any real-life instruments?

I do not.  I’m a decent beatboxer though!

What are your goals for the coming months? Any upcoming projects we can get excited about?

I just started making music videos! I’m excited about that since I never did any acting or other work in front of a camera before. Hopefully my YouTube channel is up by the time you read this, and you can find some stuff on cottonweary.com and my Instagram (mr.orange718).  And my first studio album, ‘Cotton Weary Saves The Universe’, should be released within the next 6 months.
