Catching Up With Kurt Hazard

What drew you into rap?

I got into hip-hop when I was about 13 or 14 years old. A friend of mine played me “Stan” by Eminem and it immediately grabbed my attention. This was the first time I had seen storytelling in music (at least to this extent) and that was one of the things that I loved most about hip-hop, and still do even to this day. Eminem is still one of my favorite rappers of all time because I feel like he embodies all of the things that I personally love most about hiphop: an ability to simply use words to tell stories, paint vivid pictures, express emotions, and convey certain messages.

It seems like you are a big fan of “Breaking bad” and you even made a track called walter white care to share how the show influenced you as a musician?

“Breaking Bad” is my favorite television series of all time. Walter White’s character kinda resonated with me in the sense that he lives this double life. By day, he’s a just your average high school chemistry teacher working hourly to make ends meet, and, by night, he’s Heisenberg, a sociopathic infamous drug lord who’s both feared and respected by his peers. I related to that in the sense that, by day, I felt I was this soft spoken private school student who just kinda kept to himself and never sought too much attention. But by night, I embodied this persona of “Kurt Hazard” who was bold, unapologetic and lived on his own terms.

In the spirit of the last question one of your most viewed tracks “Walter white” has some very meaningful lyrics on it, what is the story behind this track? What was your creative processes when writing these lyrics?

On the surface, I’m very humble and I’ve never really been one to brag or speak highly of myself, I’d rather let the music speak for itself. But in reality, I find myself to be extremely confident, borderline conceded, and this side of myself reveals itself mostly in my lyrics (especially here on “Walter White”). So I went into writing this song wanting to showcase my ability to put together complex flows, wordplay, metaphors, and a catchy hook all over a banger beat. The lyrics themselves were meant to come off as utterly vulgar and disrespectful as I could make them as I’m speaking directly to my peers.

You have worked with some great hip-hop producers in the past and created great sounding tracks together. Saying that If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be? Why?

There are so many great producers that I’ve discovered both here on Long Island (which is where I’m from) as well as on the internet. But I think the number one producer I’d like to collaborate with would have to be Alchemist. His beats are insane and I notice that he does often work with a lot of young, underground artists whose music is kinda in the same realm as mine, so Lord willing I can make that actually happen sometime in the near future.

What are you working on right now? Any upcoming releases/projects we can get excited about?

I spent my entire summer and then some working on this project that I have set to release in January. It’s a five song EP entitled “Radio Wav. Communication” that I feel almost plays out like a short album. It has a very focused concept with a loose narrative that I am very excited to finally let the world hear.

What do you have planned for 2018?

I start the year off by dropping the EP on January 5th and will probably spend a majority of the year promoting that and pushing it to as many people as possible. I still do plan on putting out other music as well, along with music video(s), shows, and just kinda jumping on whatever other opportunities are thrown my way. All in all, 2018 (and all the other years that are to follow) is just a never ending quest for clout.
