What first drew you into music production and Hip-hop/Trap production in particular?
The defining moment in all of it was at Chasing Summer 2016. The Chainsmokers, Martin Garrix, Hardwell and Marshmello headlined.
It was my first festival or rave ever and little did I know it would change my life.
Meeting all the amazing people, the ridiculous bass drops, the energy the DJs provided and the pure happiness that came from it was inspiring. After that festival, I decided that I wanted to get more into production and learn how to DJ so one day I could that bring the same energy and happiness that I experienced that weekend to others.
The day after the festival I got Ableton and a low end mixer from one of my best friends and a fellow DJ and just started watching hours of tutorials and practicing. Before that, I was making rap music and playing guitar since I was 14 so It didn’t take me long to learn the basics.
Coming from a hip hop heavy background, Trap was the easiest and most appealing EDM genre to me when I first got introduced into the culture. Fast forward three years and I’ve completely fallen in love with all of it.
Zovah is a very unique producer name, how did you choose that name? Any special meaning behind it?
To be honest I got the name from Skyrim a video game I spent hundreds of hours in as a teenager. In the game, you’re the “Dovahkhin” which is pretty much the master of dragons. Zovah is my name Zack and Dovahkhin = “Zovah” the master of trap.
Trap is known as one of the most complex genres to produce, how did you manage to develop such great mixing skills in such a short time? Also, what is your studio setup like?
By spending hours and hours listening to how other music is produced. Trying new things, failing at them and learning from the mistakes and then using all of it to make something that is unique.
The number one thing I tell anyone about anything in life is that if you want it, go do it! Life is what you and only you make it! If you put in the work you can do or be anything you want!
My studio setup is pretty basic, I have my production PC, my Midi controller, DJ and performance hardware and an unmatched work ethic.
Your latest track “FVDED” is your best track in our opinion! From its artwork to the Incredibly powerful sound we absolutely love it. Could you tell us more about the story of this track? Also, what is your creative processes like?
First, I really appreciate that.
The love I’ve been receiving from this track from supporters, friends, fans and others in the industry is crazy!
“FVDED” is an emotional subtle atmospheric trap song with powerful 808s and emotion that has came from everything that music has emotionally helped me and changed me over the past three years of my life.
The name was inspired by all the love I received at “FVDED in the park” a festival I went to this past summer in Vancouver. At that festival I met a lot of people that really loved and supported my music and I felt that feeling and name was a perfect match for it.
Next the artwork I made myself, I go to school for Graphic Design so I make all my own designs and branding for everything. I wanted the artwork to look exactly how the track feels.
My creative process is always about how I feel at a certain time. Every track is started and finished differently. I usually take how I’m feeling at the time and start to brainstorm ideas and make random melodies and then build from there.
My music is an extension of my personality
“FVDED” was inspired by self reflection.
What are your musical goals for the future?
I have 5 goals for the future with music
1. Inspire someone to chase whatever goal or dream they have in life.
2. Headline the festival that changed my life “Chasing summer”
3. Bring the EDM culture to my small city, there is very little EDM culture here which is heartbreaking.
4. Continusly improve
5. Continue to have fun doing it.
What are your goals for coming months? Any upcoming projects we can get excited about?
I have a few new tracks coming out including one which is what I feel like is my best to date and an upcoming EP named “Reality” which is in the works at the moment.
Also a few show announcements in the YQR area.
