Your latest track where you at is a fusion of Hip-hop & R&B. Care to share more about what first drew you into singing and music production in the first place?
When I was 14 I moved overseas from San Diego to Singapore. Before we had left, I asked for a Native Instruments Maschine for my birthday so that I could learn how to produce music. After we had moved, I spent all of my time locked in my room making beats and writing lyrics because at the time I had no friends at my new school. The first song that I released called “Endless Summer” was the first time I had sung on a hook to one of my songs. My singing wasn’t great, but I knew I had some sort of potential, so I kept that in the back of my mind…That and my mother always encouraged me to pursue singing because she saw my potential very early on. I’m not a great singer, but I can hold a note long enough for autotune to make me sound like a decent singer. During my freshman and sophomore years of high school, I was focused mainly on writing and rapping, not so much music production. But when my junior year came around I got stuck into making beats and trying to create interesting electronic music. From then on, music production became my main hobby, more than rapping or playing sports.
Almost all of your tracks incorporate real life instrumentation and have a very distinct “Old school” vibe to them, Do you play any instruments?
I’ve been playing the drums since I was 5 years old.
You have worked with some great producers in the past and you produce some of your own tracks! If you could work with anybody in the industry who would that be?
I wouldn’t say that I’ve worked with great producers because up until the last year or so, the songs that I’ve released have been mostly been me just finding beats from producers that I liked at the time and using them. If I could work with anybody in the industry, however, I’d say probably Travis Scott, Kanye West, Vinylz, London on da Track, Wondagurl, Metro Boomin, Scott Storch, Timbaland, Rick Rubin, and Pharrell/the Neptune’s.
Your alternative rock track “Hi There” is another fusion of rap and alternative rock, It’s one of the unique tracks we have heard recently and we can’t help but wonder how you created this awesome track?
“Hi There” isn’t alternative rock, I just used that tag on Soundcloud because of its one of the more popular ones. A lot of rappers trying to come up off of Soundcloud will use that tag to get their music out to a wider audience. As for how I created the track, I found a bunch of samples in a sample pack that I downloaded and threw them together. Then I put the trap drums on it and I thought the beat was complete. Sometime later that day, one of my friends was listening to “My Name Is” by Eminem, and I thought I should try to put the acapella for that song over the beat I had just made. Maybe 15 minutes after I did that, the song was done.
How would you summarize 2017?
Terrible year for reasons other than music, but I met some great people at Loyola Marymount University in the fall who have completely changed the way that I approach music and have improved my talents as not only a producer but a rapper as well.
2018 is almost upon us, What are your plans for the new year? Any upcoming projects we can get excited about?
I plan to drop more self-produced singles this year. I’m not sure if I will be dropping a project anytime soon as I am still trying to find my own lane in the industry and create a unique style that people will be able to tell who I am just by hearing the first three seconds any song that I release.
