Catching up With Darrell Simms

You are one of the few artists to come up with a lot of tracks without compromising on quality, how do you manage to produce so much quality content? Also, what is your creative processes like?

Before I ever make a track, I think to myself that I want the lyrics and the delivery to be said differently than any other artists. I do not want to write lyrics that you can find somewhere else because then it would not something worth searching for. In terms of my creative process, I base my music on how I feel during that time period. I want it to reflect my mood. This project reflected on frustration most of all. I wanted it to be unforgiving and truthful.

All of your tracks are great and we know it is hard to judge your own music but if you had to pick one favorite track which track would that be and why?

Personally, I would say Mary Poppin and Boo Boo from my first project. Their approach was so different and I tested myself. I sat on the Boo Boo beat a year till I came up with something for it.On this EP, I would say Elements because the beat, lyrics and deliver just brought out so much energy compared to anything I had done prior.

Going over your Soundcloud profile we can tell you are working with some great producers/artists If you could work with anyone who would that be?

I would definitely like to work with Kaytranada or Flying Lotus in the early beginnings. Later on, I would definitely want to cook up something with Pharrell if I manage to prove myself.

Your latest EP  “Wilcon Ave” features some great meaningful tracks and some awesome artwork, How did the EP come about? What does “Wilcox ave” mean to you?

The EP came about because when I first moved to LA I lived in an art housing facility for people that like to pursue things within the entertainment industry. Gaston lived in the same house and I later found out he also did music. He had a studio, we had built a relationship with each other and did a few tracks that I had released only as singles on Soundcloud. I wasn’t getting any reaction from them and the emotions started to escalate. Suddenly in the summer, I felt like doing an EP where I solely wanted to spit bars and discuss what I was going through in La, in terms of drugs, partying and fake people. It took us 2 months and we had done many songs but I chose to only release these. We lived on Wilcox Ave too so that’s why its called Wilcox Ave EP.

You have released plenty of tracks and even an EP in 2017! How would you summarize 2017?

A very frustrating time in terms of being taken seriously as an artist but I feel like the things I have learned and have had to endure can only aspire me to become better. It will also give me more to talk about in 2018 when I drop new stuff.

2018 has recently started, what are your goals for the new year? Any upcoming projects we can get excited about?

Well, hopefully, a few collaborations up until the summer. I definitely want to drop an even bigger and longer project towards the end of the year. Something more conscious and diverse for listeners. It will not stick to just one genre.
