Shapov EP – Shapov

Axwell’s cutting-edge imprint Axtone Records truly kicked off 2015 in style with the magnificent release of CamelPhat & A*M*E’s Paradigm, but the label’s latest release has us more excited than ever. The mysterious Shapov, currently half of the Russian dynamic duo Hard Rock Sofa alongside Denis Chepikov, is the latest addition to the Axtone family. His 2 track EP displays his leaning towards futuristic electronic sounds, and the inspiration he draws from disco, rave, and dance music pioneers. The 1st track is titled Disco Tufli, while the second one, a collaboration with DJ M.E.G. & NERAK is titled Party People. Disco Tufli exudes a retro vibe throughout the whole song, which seems to be heavily influenced by the revered duo Daft Punk. The track utilizes a synth and bass with an arpeggiator break, altogether complementing the infectious vocals from a Salsoul classic paired with fresh electric guitar riffs. Similarly, Party People is built upon retro chord stabs and hi-hat loops which then generate downtempo synth work. The track continues with an intense snare roll buildup, leading to a drop that unites the dynamic bassline with an acid touch. Shapov’s solo venture is definitely something we’ll be keeping our eyes on this year. He’s broken the rules of dance music in this brilliant EP, and we’re hungry for more.
